I hope everyone had a great holiday and wishing everyone a wonderful new year. It was so good to have the kids back on Friday and to hear all about their break and Christmas. I think we all had the chance to get reenergized and will hit the ground running again on Monday. This week is going a be a LONG one for the kids as they build back their stamina and jump right into new learning for 3rd quarter.
Second quarter grades will be emailed to you this coming Friday, the 13th. If you have any questions at all about your child's report, do not hesitate to email, call, or set up a meeting.
Tiger Pride awards for the month of December:
Reading: Nonfiction research projects-In this unit, students wil learn to think critically about nonfiction texts and what the purpose of a particular author is. Students will become experts in their field of study. Using the “lingo of experts,” students will glean the important information and create their own response to it in a form of a presentation.
Writing: Informational writing- In this unit, students will write and overview of their study of choice and complete a small book in which each chapter is written in a different kind of text.
Math: Using operations with whole numbers to solve problems- In this unit, students will learn how to solve multi-step word problems. This is something the students struggle with, so this will be important for each student to come ready to focus on.
Science: Rocks and minerals- In this unit, students will explore by studying rocks, minerals, soil layers, and landforms. To wrap up this unit, we will take a trip to the rock quarry in Willard. More information about the trip will be coming towards the end of the month.
What you can do at home...
Even though I do not send homework out, there are many things your child can be doing at home. We have a ton of websites that the students can work on from home. They know all their usernames and passwords to websites that we utilize inside the classroom. To name a few...Raz Kids (reading), Prodigy (math), Skoolbo and Moby Max (reading and math), Sumdog (math), Xtra Math, Spelling City. Also, I tell them all the time that reading at home for at least 20 minutes is so very important. I send weekly reading homework out every Monday and this gives students a chance to earn Book It coupons to Pizza Hut. They only have to read 20 minutes and fill out the paper! If they turn in a weekly reading homework sheet each week they get to have a pizza party with me during lunch time.
The link below will send your student to our spelling list for the week. We will work on these words in class, but if you notice your child is struggling, have them practice once a night at home. We will take our test on Friday.
